The hell strip, looking heavenly

Each morning and afternoon I ride my bike past the hell strip in our front yard on my way to work. ("The hell strip" is the name some people give that weird little stretch of nothing between the sidewalk and the street...) This past spring I got busy and finished it, putting in some gravel, Mexican feather grass, chamisa, and blackfoot daisy. Everything really took off once we started to get some rain.

I think it is looking especially lovely this week. It makes me smile every time I see it. These photos don't really do it justice.

  1. Nice! Looks like a really water-wise way to make your "hell strip" more interesting. I had never heard that term until recently. Funny! My whole blog is about that space, in case you're interested in what other folks are up to. :) Nice going!

  2. Thanks, Karen--it is indeed water-wise. Once I got the plants established around the end of June, I quit watering them altogether and they've done fine.

That strip was always hard to water and mow when it was grass, so good riddance--I think it looks much more interesting this way, too.

    1. Where are you located? I'm trying to plan what I can put in my hell strip: full sun in Tucson Arizona.

  3. What a beautiful solution to your sidewalk strip. I like the large stone you included in it.
